Red Sox Management & Betts Eye 2019 Return

BOSTON, MA- On a week in which Fenway Park is hosting their last home-stand of the season, news steadily flew out of the Red Sox ballpark.

On Friday afternoon members of Red Sox ownership spoke in front of the media for the first time since the firing of GM Dave Dombrowski. In what is looked at as one of the most vital offseason in Red Sox history, management told news that Red Sox nation has waited for some time. Their first point, saying Boston ownership will attempt to slash payroll under the $208 million threshold by next year.

Under arbitration and eligible to become a free agent after the 2020 season, superstar Mookie Betts and the Red Sox have a difficult decision to make over the next couple of months. Owner John Henry and chairman Tom Werner told reporters Friday that “We would hope that he [Betts] stays with us for the rest of his career. We have made some proposals in the past.”

Both Henry and Warner alluded to the fact that Betts wants to stay in Boston and that they believe Mookie loves Boston. Betts has been seen stating in interviews throughout the 2019 season that he does, in fact, love it in Boston but also states numerous times that he feels “it’s a business.

Betts, the reigning AL MVP, four-time All-Star, World Series champion, and the current face of the Boston Red Sox organization is arguably one of the best players in all of Major League Baseball. The tough decision to sign Betts and other possible free agents in the Red Sox organization such as slugger J.D. Martinez, Brock Holt, Jackie Bradley Jr. and more will add to what will be, to some, the most crucial offseason Boston has seen in their history.

While many believe that Betts will stay in Boston for the rest of his career, it is still uncertain if he will re-sign or if the organization will offer an extension before the 2020 season. “Hopefully, there’s a meeting of the minds. I think he loves the Boston Red Sox,” said ownership. Nonetheless, it’s safe to say that Boston will be ecstatic if Mookie Betts signs a long term contract to stay in Boston in the near future.
